Description

This burger features a savory turkey patty infused with Southwest-inspired spices, pan-fried to a tender finish. It is topped with creamy melted cheese, vibrant diced red bell peppers, and fresh cilantro, all nestled within a lightly toasted sesame seed bun. The combination offers a balanced profile of savory, fresh, and subtly spicy notes, creating a satisfying and flavorful meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground turkey, 93% lean
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 sesame seed burger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Optional: hot sauce or salsa for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, diced red onion, breadcrumbs, egg, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and form them into patties, about 1/2-inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent bulging during cooking.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or cast iron pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully place the turkey patties in the skillet.
  4. Cook the patties for 5-7 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  5. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on top of each patty, cover the skillet, and allow the cheese to melt.
  6. While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the sesame seed buns.
  7. Assemble the burgers: Place a cheesy turkey patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with diced red bell pepper and fresh cilantro. Place the top bun on and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not overmix the turkey patty mixture; this helps keep the burgers tender and juicy.

For an extra kick, add finely diced jalapeño to the patty mixture or as a topping.

Ensure patties are cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) for food safety.

Serve with a side of sweet potato fries or a simple green salad.
